7 Ways to Build Self-discipline Even if You Don't Feel Like It

Episode Summary

Self-discipline is a learned skill, not an innate characteristic. That means with consistency and willpower you can build self-discipline like a muscle! Have you ever thought to yourself, “yes, I’m going to do this and that tomorrow!” And the next thing you know, when you wake up, you simply don’t feel like it? It doesn’t have to be work-related; it can be just sending that one email or washing the dishes before heading to bed. Whatever it is, it boils down to the fact that maybe we want to be less distracted and instead be more engaged and productive. In Episode 64 of the Total Fit Boss Chick, we’re breaking down “Simple Ways to Build Self-Discipline Even If You Don’t Feel Like It!” Now, we’re not alone when we get sucked into the feeling of procrastinating, feeling lazy, and not being in the mood to get work done. And most of the time, this leaves us feeling very unaccomplished and unhappy because we didn’t really do anything. But what we really need in order to push through and break that cycle is self-discipline. Self-discipline can make you run a marathon or climb a mountain. Don’t worry; I’m not asking you to do that! But at its core, self-discipline is what will get you far. I’m sure you might be thinking, “well, I don’t have self-discipline.” I have great news for you! We aren’t born with discipline; it’s something that is learned! I want you to change the concept you have of self-discipline to something like a muscle. It gets stronger the more you work on it, it has muscle memory and can be developed. Similarly, if you don’t bring yourself to put in the effort to tone and refine it, you won’t be able to attain the strength to continue and push through! So, don’t forget to tune in to the Total Fit Boss Chick Podcast to catch Episode 64, Simple Ways to Build Self-Discipline Even If You Don’t Feel Like It!” Next thing you know you can Get Stuff Done: One Day at a Time!

Key Points on Simple Ways

Change Your Identity

I know it sounds like a lot and maybe even too much, but it honestly starts here. We need to change our identity, what we believe we have and can achieve. If you don't think self-discipline is something you have and cannot build it, then it's something you really can't have it, you. Self-discipline is a skill and an action verb that requires you to put in the work. If we change our mindset so that we CAN build this skill, we will become more resilient, persevere through tough times and become stronger overall.

Start Small and Consistent

The best way to build self-discipline and apply it, especially when we need it most, is by starting small and staying consistent. You can do this by pairing self-discipline with your daily habits. Our habits are actions we do subconsciously, so when you pair it with a habit, it would be easier to develop and stick to self-discipline when you pair it with a habit.
